WAR RELOCATION CENTER PROJECT

Starting after the 1941 Pearl Harbor attacks, as they were perceived as a national threat, the United States government forcibly removed almost 120,000 people of Japanese ancestry from their homes and incarcerated them in ten ‘War Relocation Centers’ for the remainder of the war. More than 70,000 were American citizens. This body of work, ten 7” square pieces based on partial layouts of these War Relocation Centers, was conceived after the Covid outbreak, which saw an enormous rise in anti-Asian hate crimes.
